UNDER 18'S PREMIER DIVISION With
only days left of the football season the fixtures are coming thick and fast,
the chase is on for the premier league title with no less than four teams In
with a shout are leaders, Quorn Juniors, A C Wigston, Asfordby Amateurs and Kingsway
Rangers. All teams are dropping points and the finish line is in sight. Kingsway
arrived at Westfield knowing that they had to take maximum points from their games
in hand, if they were to stand any chance of catching leaders Quorn. However they
were not prepared for a whirlwind start from Westfield, who had rediscovered their
scoring touch after a lean spell. Ryan Brightwell had a penalty appeal turned
down in the first minute, as Westfield dominated the early stages. Several chances
came and went before Dominic Hancox opened the scoring, curling the ball over
the keeper for his first goal of the season. Hancox had clearly got a taste for
scoring goals as he headed in another from a great corner by Ryan Brightwell.
Stuart Heathcote then sent in a great cross for Brightwell to meet with a bullet
header to make the score 3-0 after 20 minutes. Westfield were in dreamland, and
Kingsway were in total disarray. More chances came as Westfield continued to dominate
the first half, playing their best football of the season. When half time arrived,
Kingsway had started to get back into the game, but had failed to convert any
of their chances. Westfield took to the field expecting to face a different Kingsway
performance, as the half time rollicking could be heard from the other side of
the pitch, and this proved to be the case as Kingsway pulled 2 goals back within
15 minutes, Then a long ball from the keeper put Westfield under pressure, and
as Westfield keeper Marvin Haas rushed out, he mistimed his challenge to give
away a penalty, which Tom Mansfield put away to make it 3-3. With nerves jangling
and Kingsway back into the game with the wind behind them, Westfield won a corner,
James Hancox went up and scored with a great headed goal to put his team in front
again. Ryan Brightwell then scored his second as a great cross from Matt Hunt
was fired into the net from close range. However Kingsway were not finished and
Tom Mansfield broke away again to score a great individual goal, beating 2 defenders
and firing the ball into the corner of the net, setting up a frantic last 5 minutes. The
next goal however was scored by Westfield, as Matt Hunt picked up a loose ball,
and his shot finally went into the net off both posts leaving the keeper bemused!
At the end of a 10 goal thriller, Westfield were the deserved winners, gaining
revenge for the reverse fixture, where they lost 5-3. A tremendous game, these
2 Teams have produced 18 goals in 2 entertaining games this season. Westfield
made the long trip to Kegworth and managed to lose 3 players on the way. On a
lovely warm summers evening, conditions were perfect for football. With no sign
of the missing players, and perhaps with the Champions League games on Television
later on in the evening in mind, Westfield decide to kick off with only 10 players.
They more than held their own, and after 20 minutes were able to bring on an 11th
player, as the missing threesome finally arrived from their stressful journey.
Shortly afterwards, Tom Wallace opened the scoring, jinking his way through the
Kegworth defence before firing home into the corner. Shortly after, Wallace scored
his second with a great volley from the edge of the area. Just before half time,
Kegworth scored. A shot was well saved by Westfield keeper Nicky Dean, but the
rebound was fired home. Westfield pushed forward in the second half, and scored
a further 4 goals, without reply, Wallace completing his hat-trick, and Ryan Brightwell,
scoring 2 and Stuart Heathcote the other. Wigston United dented Quorn's lead
at the summit with midweek win goals from Issa Duale and Nick Hart netted in a
2 - 1 win for Wigston. Kingsway Rangers beat rivals Asfordby Amateurs 3 - 0 with
goals from Tom Mansfield (2) and Callum Wright but came a cropper at Westfield
at the weekend. Kegworth Imps had a fine 5 - 1 win over Syston Town Striker
Nathan Cartwright proved to be AC Wigston's key figure as they overcame a battling
Mowbray Rangers 5-0 at Guthlaxton College. Cartwright's fine hat-trick, allied
to two more for leading scorer Dean Wade means that Wigston's storming run of
form continues to push them to the top of the table with just three games left
to play.
