PRESIDENTS TROPHY Asfordby Amateurs have made it to the final after beating
local rivals Syston Town by 3 - 0 with a good all round team performance, Nathan
Smith, Luke Padmore and Thomas cooper did the damage for Asfordby they now meet
Kingsway Rangers in the final at Aylestone Park this Sunday 2pm K.O. COUNTY
CUP Kingsway Rangers are now going for the double as on Sunday they won
the Under 18 county cup with a 3 - 0 victory over Quorn Juniors. PREMIER
DIVISION With only two fixtures in the division it gave the chasing pack
a chance to catch up and Wigston United did just that in the game against Westfield
Wanderers, Wigston won the toss and opted to play with the wind behind them. This
proved to be a good decision as a snowstorm coincided with the kick off, and Westfield
played the first 15 minutes playing into a strong wind and driving snow. The difficult
conditions meant that Westfield struggled to get out of their own half, and Wigston
took advantage to exert some early pressure. Several chances came and went, but
Wigston were unable to capitalise on their superiority. As the weather improved,
Wigston won a penalty when Nick Hart was brought down in the box. Hart picked
himself up and took the resulting spot-kick; however his effort hit the outside
of the post and went out for a goal kick. Hart redeemed himself shortly afterwards
however. As the defence backed off, Hart decided to try his luck, and his shot
curled into the top corner from 25 yards. As the wind dropped and bright sunshine
broke out, Westfield came back into the game, Ryan Brighwell broke clear on the
left, and found Stuart Heathcote unmarked in the box, however, his smart shot
was well blocked by the keeper, who saved a certain goal. A couple of minutes
later, Brightwell sent Heathcote clear again, but this time his shot went narrowly
wide of the left hand post. Westfield increased the pressure, and when the ball
broke out to Ben Sykes his low rasping shot was well saved by the keeper. The
game reached half time with Wigston leading 1-0 Westfield rearranged their defence
to cope with the threat of Hart, and seemed to cope much better in the second
half, However he did break away on one occasion, but his shot was well blocked
by keeper Marvin Haas. Westfield pressed hard, and chances came to Alex Tustain,
Ben Sykes, David Drewery, Ryan Brightwell and Stuart Heathcote, but Wigston held
firm. The game was fast flowing, and end to end, and excitement grew as both teams
kept breaking away. A grandstand finish saw every player including Westfield Keeper
Haas in the Wigston box for a succession of corners, but Wigston's goal led a
charmed life, and they held on to claim all 3 points. A C Wigston could not find
the winner in the match against the improving Kegworth Imps with the game ending
with a 3 - 3 score line. The A C scorers were Sam Sheils (2) and Lewis Madelin
leaving them four point of the running for top spot.
UNDER 17'S COUNTY
CUP Champions Melton Foxes had a day off league action when they were in
the county cup final at Holmes Park against Westfield Wanderers. But there was
not double on the cards when Westfield went on to record a 3 - 1 win, Foxes took
the lead on six minutes when Mark Tinsley got above the Westfield defence to head
home Will Keightley's corner. Westfield equalised when a free kick deceived keeper
Andy Botham creeping in under the bar halfway through the first half by Matthew
Shorrock. Westfield took the lead with twenty minutes to go converting a cross
at the near post With Issac Walsh finding the net. But it was not to be Foxes
